PPE Disinfection

Reusable PPE must be disinfected properly. This includes any reusable gowns, eye protection, and respiratory protection. This module will cover eye protection disinfection only, as eye protection is the only PPE you may be responsible to disinfect during your clinical rotations.

When to Disinfect Eye Protection

Eye protection disinfection should be performed at the following times:

Contact and droplet precautions No contact and droplet precautions
  • Between each patient (upon complete doffing)1
  • When complete doffing takes place:
    • before breaks1
    • before leaving the patient care area2
    • before leaving the facility1
  • Between patients, only if soiled

How to Disinfect Eye Protection3

  1. Don a new pair of gloves
Steps 2-3 only necessary if item is visibly soiled or contaminated
  1. Using a clean cloth, wipe with soap and water, cleaning facial protection in the following order:
    • inside
    • outside
  1. Using one disinfectant wipe at a time, thoroughly wipe elements in the following order:
    • interior
    • foam band
    • strap exterior
    • exterior of visor
  1. Rinse with water & remove excess water
  1. Using one disinfectant wipe at a time, thoroughly wipe elements in the following order:
    • interior
    • exterior
  1. Using one disinfectant wipe at a time, thoroughly wipe elements in the following order:
    • interior
    • foam band
    • strap exterior
    • exterior of visor
  1. Ensure all surfaces remain wet with disinfectant for at least 1 minute (or applicable disinfectant wipe contact time)
  1. Rinse equipment with tap water if visibility is compromised by residual disinfectant
  1. Allow to air dry or use clean absorbent towel to dry
  1. Remove and dispose of gloves
  1. Perform hand hygiene
