Summary

  • As a student participating in a clinical placement in B.C., WorkSafeBC considers you a worker
  • As a worker, you have the right to:
    • know about the hazards in your workplace
    • participate in health and safety activities
    • refuse unsafe work
  • During your clinical placement, you are covered by WorkSafeBC and are eligible for health care benefits in the event of an injury
  • At the beginning of your rotation at a new location, you will be given an onsite safety orientation specific to that location. You must follow the Health Authority and site-specific safety procedures.
  • If you experience an incident or accident, you must report it to UBC at cairs.ubc.ca
  • Check with your program for details on the specific patients and procedures you are able to see and participate in. Remember that your participation is at the discretion of the supervising health care team’s assessment of risk, your program-specific guidelines and provided that the appropriate PPE is available.
  • In the event of an outbreak, Medical Health Officers have the authorization to restrict student access to COVID-19 Outbreak wards at their discretion.

  • If you have concerns about your safety while on clinical placement:
    • Attempt to resolve the concerns with your Preceptor (if able)
    • Contact your program coordinator if safety issues cannot be resolved or you need to refuse unsafe work
    • Consult with fom.safety@ubc.ca as required
    • Connect with the Faculty of Medicine Joint Health & Safety Committee. There are student representatives who may bring forward issues on your behalf
