Safety Rights & Responsibilities
Every worker in BC has the right to a healthy and safe workplace. Because the law considers learners participating in clinical placements as workers, you have the following three worker rights during your clinical placement1:
- Right to know about any potential hazards1
- Right to participate in identifying and solving health and safety problems1
- Right to refuse work that you believe is unsafe to your health or jeopardizes your safety or that of any other worker, without repercussion1
Learners are covered by WorkSafeBC when participating in required clinical placements in BC. They are eligible for health care benefits in the event of an injury during clinical placements.
Workers in BC also have the following responsibilities:
- Reporting hazards to your supervisor (i.e. anything that could cause an injury to someone or cause damage to equipment or the environment)
- Follow safe work procedures and act in a safe manner at all times
- Use PPE when required
- When required, cooperate with Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committees, WorkSafeBC officers, and anybody with health and safety duties
- Report workplace injuries and seek first aid when needed
- Never work impaired by drugs or alcohol
